The Theory Test

The theory test consists of multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test which must be passed together.

You have 57 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. The possible answers to each question are displayed on a computer screen. Three of the questions are about a short video which you will be able to watch as many times as you like during the test. The pass mark is 43 out of 50.

These questions are based on the Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and Driving the essential skills.

After you have answered the theory questions you can have a break of up to 3 minutes before the hazard perception test starts.

The hazard perception test consists of 14 video clips which feature everyday roads scenes. Each clip will contain at least one developing hazard. However, one of the clips will include two hazards.

A developing hazard is something that would cause you to take action. For example, change speed or direction. You can score up to 5 points for each developing hazard. You only get one attempt at each clip. You cannot review or change your responses. The pass mark is 44 out of 75.

Both parts of the theory test must be passed at the same time. Once you have passed your theory test you have two years to pass your driving test. After two years if you have not passed your driving test you will need to retake your theory test.
