How to Become a Driving Instructor in the UK
If you want to become a driving instructor, you need to complete the Approved Driving Instructor qualification process. This is often known as ADI training and includes three main stages: ADI Part 1 theory, ADI Part 2 driving ability and ADI Part 3 instructional ability.
ADI Part 1 theory training
ADI Part 1 is the theory stage of the qualification process. It tests your knowledge of driving theory, hazard perception, road procedure and the information you will need as a professional driver trainer.
I can support your Part 1 preparation with guidance, an online theory app, useful reference materials and training that links theory to real driving and teaching situations.
ADI Part 2 driving ability training
ADI Part 2 assesses your driving ability. To qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor, you need to demonstrate a high standard of safe, systematic and professional driving.
I have a strong advanced driving background, including qualification to drive 999 blue light ambulances with East Midlands Ambulance Service, along with several other advanced driving qualifications.
ADI Part 3 instructional ability training
ADI Part 3 assesses your ability to teach, coach, adapt a lesson and manage risk while working with a pupil. This part of your training focuses on lesson structure, communication, client-centred learning, risk management and helping pupils make progress safely.
My training helps you build confidence, structure lessons, adapt your teaching, manage risk and support different types of learners.

Pink trainee licence support
Subject to suitability and availability, I may be able to sponsor a pink trainee licence. This can allow you to gain real teaching experience while continuing to work towards full qualification.
ADI test availability and training timescales
At the moment, booking ADI Part 2 and Part 3 tests can be challenging because of DVSA test availability. You should be aware that it may be difficult to book both tests within two years of passing your theory test.
Before committing to training, it is sensible to understand the qualification process, the time commitment and the possible impact of test waiting times.
