— Alistair Stuart ADI

If you drive an automatic car can you train to be a driving instructor? YES YOU CAN.

You do not need to have an expensive new car to be a driving instructor. Use the car you already have. If you need to buy a car consider older cars which provide a better value for money option. Consider cars which are cheap to maintain and insure.

You do not need to give up your job to train as a driving instructor. Keep the security of your present job so you know your bills are paid each month. If you decide you no longer want to train as a driver instructor, your circumstances change or you fail to qualify you still have your financial security.

If you decide to go onto a trainee licence keep your job to pay your bills. Work as a trainee driving instructor in your free time. That way you avoid putting yourself under the make or break pressure you may feel if you have no other financial security other than the income from your training licence. What if you decide it is not for you or you fail to qualify? Use the trainee licence as an opportunity to learn, develop and create time to reflect. Use the trainee licence to gain experience and to earn the money to cover your training costs so that in effect your training becomes a neutral outlay.

If you enjoy driving or want to set up your own business fantastic. However, training to qualify as a driving instructor is not easy. It is a substantial investment in both time and money. Ask yourself what other transferable skills have you got? Are you a people person? Do you enjoy teaching? Do you like to help and support people? Do you want to support road safety?

Warning

At this time booking ADI Part 2 and 3 tests is challenging due to the lack of tests being made available by the DVSA.

You need to be aware that you may find it difficult to book both your Part 2 and 3 tests within two years of passing your theory test. However, I am hopeful this will change in the near future with more test dates being made available due to the ongoing scrutiny of the DVSA waiting times.

Do your research before committing to and paying upfront for training courses.

If YOU ARE BEING OFFERED A CONTRACT READ THE CONTRACT AND UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE BUYING INTO!

What will happen if you do not pass your Part 3? What happens if you cannot book your Part 3 within two years of passing your theory? What are the financial penalties you will face? What are your obligations under the contract you have signed? What happens if you discover becoming an ADI is not for you and you want to walk away? Can you walk away without financial penalty?

If you are signing up for a franchise does it include a supply of pupils? How many pupils will be provided over what period of time? What happens if no pupils are provided to you? What happens if you cannot find any pupils are you are stuck paying an expensive franchise fee? What happens if you do not have the number of learners you need to pay the franchise fee or cover your day to day business and living costs? What additional training and support will you be given?

If you are not being made aware of all of the above by your potential training company before you pay upfront and sign a legally binding contract ask yourself why? Understand what you are agreeing to. Understand what you are buying. Understand any financial penalties.

Joining a franchise may suit your needs. For example, you may be offered quality training, support and ongoing CPD which adds real value to your franchise. Please do your research and understand what you are buying into. Once you have bought into a franchise you have to live with it. So make sure you make the right choice for you.

As a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), there are national organisations you can join to support your development within the driver training profession.

Have you considered joining one of the national driving instructor organisations such as the Driving Instructors Association  https://www.driving.org/   or MSA GB  https://msagb.com/  or ADINJC https://www.adinjc.org.uk/

You could phone their help lines and ask advice about training providers and understanding the training contract you are being offered. You could ask for their advice and guidance about training providers and what pitfalls to avoid.

Why should you train with me?

I am a highly qualified and professional driver trainer. Cick here to view my qualifications. I qualified as an ADI in 2005.

  • One to one training with me throughout your training programme.

  • I offer flexible training which meets your needs.

  • No tie into costly training and no upfront fees. Pay as you go. If you do not like my training you are free to walk away at any time.

  • I am your single point of contact. If you need to rearrange your training schedule, need extra help with your training programme or support I am a phone call away.

  • After you qualify you will still have ongoing support.

I offer training in a very high specification automatic car. Most ADI training courses are delivered in manual cars. However, there is no reason why you cannot qualify as an ADI using an automatic car which may better suit your needs. Also, if you have a full manual car licence, you can qualify as an ADI using an automatic car and still teach in a manual car if you choose to. The option is yours.

What are the benefits of my course?

  • Integrated training from your first training session to your Part 3 success covering the ADI Part 1, 2 and 3 tests.

  • Integrated training which helps you to put into context, from day one, how the skills you are learning all come together to make you an effective driver trainer.

  • Pay as you go. No costly upfront fees to pay. No tie-ins and no risk. If you do not like my training you can walk away at any time.

  • Train as you want to train. For example, if you want to concentrate on one part of the qualifying exams at a time then you can. Maybe you have passed Parts 1 and 2 and need to focus on your part 3.

    Part 1 Theory

I will support you in preparing for your Part 1 theory exam. You will have access to an on line theory app. I will also support you by signposting you to other references and sources of information. Theory is linked into your training from session one. In car 1:1 training and Zoom sessions available.

    Part 2 Driving Ability

I have a strong advanced driving background. For example, I qualified to drive 999 blue light ambulances with East Midlands Ambulance Service. I also have several other advanced driving qualifications.

    Part 3 Instructional Ability

I am a highly qualified driver trainer and I have the skills to deliver your training. I am a Grade A, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). I am also a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency Registered Fleet Driver Trainer (Category B Vehicles). I have also been awarded the RoSPA National Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction with all parts of the qualifying examinations passed with distinction, City and Guilds Level 3 Award in Teaching and Training and the BTEC Level 4 Professional Award in Coaching For Driver Development. I have also attended The QEF Queen Elizabeth's Foundation for disabled people - Teaching People with Disabilities to Drive and the Disability Awareness Course North East Drive Mobility in Conjunction with Driving Mobility. I have also completed the Disability Driving Instructors ADI Training Programme. I specialise in teaching people to drive with different educational needs and learning differences.

For the right Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) I may sponsor a ‘Pink’ training licence and you may be offered a franchise with me when you qualify. The right person will be a PDI who demonstrates the same values and customer service as myself and who also wants to be the best driving instructor they can be.

I love being a driving instructor. I have always been interested in driving and I like to teach and support people. I particularly enjoy teaching people with different needs and learners who are struggling to learn.

Train how you want to train

Train how you want to train. My preferred training approach links theory, driving and instructional ability together from you first training session. However, I can also offer you bespoke training to meet your specific needs. For example, standalone Part 1, 2 and 3 training. You can concentrate on what you would like to learn. Perhaps you want to focus on each part of the qualifying ADI exams until passed. Maybe you do not want any help for Part 1 but would like to focus on Parts 2 and 3 during your training. It is up to you. I also offer a choice of blended training including a mixture of in car, online Zoom and email support.

I can also provide you with basic business mentoring. I will tell you what you need to know to set up your own driving school.
