Online PDI and ADI Training by Zoom
Focused one to one development wherever you are in the UK
Good instructor development should help you understand what is happening, why it is happening and what you can do next.
I provide individual online training by Zoom for Potential Driving Instructors and qualified ADIs. Sessions are calm, constructive and shaped around your experience, current concerns and intended outcome.
Online training can be particularly useful when you need help analysing your practice, understanding feedback, planning your development or preparing for an ADI Part 3 test or Standards Check.
You do not need to be based in Rotherham to take part.
Who is online instructor training for?
Zoom training may be suitable if you are:
preparing for ADI Parts 1, 2 or 3;
working on a trainee licence;
uncertain about the training or feedback you have received;
preparing for a DVSA Standards Check;
newly qualified and looking for further support;
an experienced ADI reviewing or developing your teaching;
returning to instructor training after a break;
looking for an independent professional perspective;
struggling to identify what needs to improve next.
You do not need to wait until a test or Standards Check is approaching. Online training can also support continuing professional development and regular reflection on your teaching.
What can we cover during a Zoom session?
Your session will be planned around what you need rather than a fixed presentation or generic course.
Possible areas include:
understanding the ADI Part 3 competencies;
reviewing Part 3 or Standards Check feedback;
lesson planning and agreeing meaningful goals;
adapting a lesson as the pupil’s needs change;
risk management and levels of instructor support;
client centred learning;
questioning, listening and feedback;
encouraging pupil responsibility;
identifying the cause of a learning difficulty;
supporting nervous pupils and different learning needs;
reflective practice and action planning;
trainee licence development;
ADI Part 1 knowledge and hazard perception;
preparation and reflection for ADI Part 2.
The purpose is not to provide a script or manufacture a rehearsed performance for an examiner. Effective instruction should remain safe, responsive and appropriate for the pupil.
Training based on your starting point
Before the session, we will agree what you want to explore and what would make the training useful.
You may wish to bring relevant information such as:
a Part 3 or Standards Check report;
notes or feedback from previous training;
an example lesson plan;
a concern arising from one of your lessons;
a reflective record or development plan;
questions about a particular instructional situation.
During the session, we will examine the available evidence, identify priorities and consider practical ways to move forward.
Where appropriate, we will finish by agreeing a manageable action plan and identifying what evidence would show that your practice is developing.
Please remove pupils’ names and any other identifying information from documents or examples shared during training.
Developing safer and more effective instruction
My approach encourages you to look beyond what happened and consider why it happened.
We may explore questions such as:
What did you observe?
What did the pupil appear to understand?
What evidence supports that conclusion?
How did you manage the risk?
Was the level of support appropriate?
What effect did your intervention have?
What could you adapt next time?
How will you recognise improvement?
The aim of my training is to help you become a thoughtful, adaptable instructor who can observe accurately, make informed decisions and respond to the individual pupil.
Online training price
Individual Zoom training costs £40 for one hour.
The session will focus on an agreed area of development so that the time is used purposefully. There is no requirement to book a course or a block of sessions.
About your trainer
I am Alistair Stuart, an Approved Driving Instructor and instructor trainer with over 21 years’ experience.
My training is calm, supportive and centred on the individual.
I do not expect every instructor to teach in exactly the same way. My role is to help you understand the principles behind safe and effective instruction and apply them appropriately to different pupils and situations.
