PDI and Driving Instructor Support in Rotherham
Practical, supportive development for PDIs and ADIs who feel stuck or uncertain
Training to become a driving instructor can sometimes feel overwhelming. Even after qualifying, working as an ADI can feel surprisingly isolating.
You may be delivering lessons but wondering whether you are:
planning them effectively;
managing risk consistently;
giving your pupil enough responsibility;
asking useful questions;
adapting your teaching to the individual;
accurately identifying why difficulties are occurring;
properly prepared for your ADI Part 3 test or Standards Check.
If you are uncertain about your development, struggling with your current training or simply need an experienced instructor trainer to help you identify your next step, you are welcome to contact me.
I provide calm, constructive and individual support for PDIs and ADIs in Rotherham and the surrounding area.
Support for PDIs who are struggling
Becoming a driving instructor involves much more than learning a collection of teaching techniques or preparing a lesson for the ADI Part 3 test.
You need to develop the ability to observe accurately, manage risk, understand what your pupil needs and adjust your teaching while the lesson is taking place.
You may benefit from additional support if:
your current training feels too general or rushed;
you are receiving conflicting advice;
you do not fully understand the ADI Part 3 competencies;
your training concentrates on what to say rather than how to teach;
you are struggling to transfer your training into real lessons;
you have been unsuccessful in a Part 3 attempt;
your trainee licence is progressing but your instructional confidence is not;
you want an independent assessment of your present development;
you feel you need more structured, formal training.
Needing further help does not mean that you are unsuitable for the profession. It may mean that your present training has not yet helped you understand what is happening, why it is happening and what you can do differently.
My role is to help you examine the evidence and develop an appropriate way forward.
Support for qualified driving instructors
Qualification is an important achievement, but it is not the end of an instructor’s development.
I also support newly qualified and experienced ADIs who want to develop areas such as:
lesson planning;
risk management;
client centred learning;
coaching and questioning;
adapting lessons for different learning needs;
supporting nervous or anxious learners;
giving accurate and constructive feedback;
encouraging learner responsibility;
preparing for a DVSA Standards Check;
reflecting more effectively on their own performance.
The purpose is not to produce a rehearsed lesson for the DVSA examiner. It is to develop teaching that is safe, responsive and genuinely useful to the pupil.
A free 20-minute initial conversation
If you are unsure what support you need, I offer a free initial conversation of up to 20 minutes.
This gives you an opportunity to explain where you are in your development, what is causing concern and what support you have already received. I can offer brief initial guidance, help you identify possible next steps and explain whether my training is likely to be suitable for you.
There is no obligation to book training afterwards.
Fair use of initial support
The free 20-minute conversation is intended to provide initial guidance and help you decide what to do next. It is not a substitute for formal instructor training,
Training based on your actual needs
If you decide to continue with paid training, we will begin by establishing your current position and agreeing an intended outcome.
Your training may include:
discussing your previous experience and current concerns;
reviewing relevant feedback or a Part 3 result;
observing your driving or instructional practice;
identifying strengths and development needs;
exploring alternative teaching strategies;
practising risk management and intervention decisions;
developing questioning and feedback skills;
agreeing realistic actions for further practice;
reviewing evidence of progress.
You will not be expected to follow a fixed script or copy one particular teaching style. The aim is to help you understand the principles behind effective instruction and apply them appropriately to different pupils and situations.
A calm and constructive approach
I am Alistair Stuart, an Approved Driving Instructor and instructor trainer with over 21 years’ experience.
My approach is supportive, honest and centred on professional development.
I will encourage you to reflect on:
what you observed;
what evidence informed your decisions;
how the pupil responded;
whether risk was managed appropriately;
what helped learning take place;
what you could adapt next time.
My aim is to help you become a thoughtful, adaptable and responsible instructor and not simply someone who can perform for a test.
Areas of PDI and ADI development
Training can be tailored to support:
ADI Part 1 knowledge and hazard perception;
ADI Part 2 driving ability;
ADI Part 3 instructional ability;
trainee licence development;
Standards Check preparation;
lesson planning and structure;
risk management;
client centred learning;
instructional techniques;
coaching and questioning;
accurate observation and analysis;
support for pupils with different learning needs;
reflective practice and continuing professional development.
Take the next step
If you are a PDI or ADI in Rotherham who feels stuck, uncertain or in need of additional support, please contact me for an initial conversation.
You do not need to arrive with all the answers. We can begin by identifying what is happening, what support you have already received and what would be the most useful next step.
There is no obligation to book training, and I will be honest about whether I believe I can help.
