Practical Driving Test Support in Rotherham
Helpful guidance for learner drivers taking automatic driving lessons and preparing for the practical driving test in Rotherham.
The practical driving test can feel like a big step, but it is simply an opportunity to show that you can drive safely, independently and responsibly in a range of road and traffic conditions.
My automatic driving lessons in Rotherham are designed to help you build the confidence, knowledge and practical skills needed for test day and for driving safely after you pass.
What Happens During the Practical Driving Test?
The car driving test has four main parts:
· an eyesight check;
· ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions;
· general driving ability, including independent driving;
· one reversing manoeuvre.
The test is the same for manual and automatic cars. You will usually drive for around 38 minutes.
Eyesight Check
At the start of the test, you will need to read a number plate from the correct distance. If you cannot meet the eyesight requirement, the test will not continue.
You must be able to read a new-style number plate from 20 metres, or an old-style number plate from 20.5 metres.
‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Vehicle Safety Questions
You will be asked two vehicle safety questions. A show me, tell me question is asked at the start of the test before you drive and an on the move safety question is asked while you are driving.
During lessons, we practice these questions so you know how to answer them calmly and safely.
General Driving Ability and Independent Driving
You will drive in different road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways. The examiner is looking for safe decisions, good observation, appropriate speed, correct positioning, smooth control and awareness of other road users.
You will drive independently for around 20 to 35 minutes. You may be asked to follow directions from a sat nav, traffic signs or a combination of both. The examiner will set up the sat nav for you.
If you go the wrong way, it does not automatically mean you have failed. What matters is that you continue to drive safely and follow the examiner’s directions.
Pulling Over and Moving Away
During the test, you will be asked to pull over and move away safely. This may include a normal stop at the side of the road, moving off from behind a parked vehicle or completing a hill start.
You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.
Reversing Manoeuvres
The examiner will ask you to complete one reversing exercise. This may be:
· parallel parking at the side of the road;
· bay parking, either driving in and reversing out or reversing in and driving out;
· pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing for around two car lengths and rejoining traffic safely.
If You Make a Mistake During Your Test
Try not to panic if something does not go perfectly. You can carry on after a mistake, and it may not affect your result if it is not serious. The examiner will only stop the test if they believe your driving is dangerous.
Can Someone Sit in on Your Driving Test?
The examiner will ask if you want someone to sit in the back of the car during the test or be with you for the result and feedback. This is usually your driving instructor, but it can be a relative or friend.
The person observing must be over 16 and cannot take any part in the test.
Driving Test Faults and Your Result
There are three types of faults on the driving test:
· Driving fault: a mistake that is not potentially dangerous, although repeated driving faults can become serious.
· Serious fault: something potentially dangerous.
· Dangerous fault: something that involves actual danger to you, the examiner, another road user or property.
You will pass if you make no more than 15 driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.
When You Pass Your Test
If you pass, the examiner will explain any faults, give you a pass certificate and ask whether you want your full licence sent to you automatically.
You can start driving straight away once you have passed. You do not need to wait for your full licence to arrive.
If Your Driving Test is Cancelled
Driving tests can be cancelled or stopped because of dangerous weather, problems with the car, illness or other circumstances. If bad weather is forecast, check your booking confirmation for the test centre contact details.
If DVSA cancels your test, they will send you a new date. If your test cannot be completed because of a problem with you or your car, you may need to book and pay again.
Support for Learners with a Disability, Health Condition or Learning Difficulty
When booking your driving test, you should say if you have a disability, health condition or learning difficulty. You still need to drive to the required standard, but the examiner may be able to make reasonable adjustments for your situation.
This may include extra time for instructions and directions, written notes or hand signals for deaf or hearing-impaired learners, or adjustments to the independent driving section where appropriate.
I welcome learners with different needs and will do my best to help you prepare calmly and confidently for your practical driving test.
