Advanced Driver Development in Rotherham
Develop your driving beyond simply being competent
Passing your driving test is not the end of learning to drive.
Advanced driver development is for qualified drivers who want to improve their awareness, anticipation, judgement and decision making and develop a more proactive approach to driving.
At Alistair Stuart Driver Training, I provide one to one automatic driver development in Rotherham and the surrounding area, tailored to your experience, confidence and individual goals.
What is advanced driver development?
Good driving is not simply about controlling the car correctly. It involves recognising what is happening around you, anticipating what could happen next and making safe, well timed decisions before a situation becomes a problem.
My approach develops five connected areas:
Awareness – What can you see, and what information is available?
Anticipation – What might happen next?
Judgement – How could the developing situation affect you?
Decision making – What is the safest and most appropriate response?
Car control – How do you put that decision into practice smoothly and safely?
I often bring these together through a simple principle:
Look. Think. Do.
Look for relevant information and developing hazards.
Think about what could happen and what you may need to do.
Do what is appropriate, with enough time and space to do it safely.
The aim is to help you become a driver who is increasingly proactive rather than reactive.
What can we work on?
Your session will be based around your own driving rather than following a fixed course.
Depending on your needs, we could work on areas such as:
observation and situational awareness
anticipation and forward planning
hazard recognition and risk management
judgement and decision making
speed, position and use of space
motorway and dual carriageway driving
rural road driving
busy and unfamiliar roads
smooth and progressive car control
developing greater independence and confidence
We can also look at situations that you find particularly challenging and explore what information could help you make earlier, safer decisions.
Who is advanced driver development for?
You do not need to be preparing for an advanced driving test.
These sessions may suit you if you have held a driving licence for several years and would simply like to develop your skills further.
They may also be useful if you:
want to become a safer and more thoughtful driver
have become aware of habits you would like to improve
want to develop your motorway or higher speed road driving
would like an experienced instructor to independently review your driving
want to improve your observation, planning and decision making
have recently changed to an automatic car
simply enjoy driving and want to continue developing your skills
There is no expectation that your driving will be perfect. The purpose is to identify what is already working well and agree where further development would be worthwhile.
A calm, individual approach
I have been an Approved Driving Instructor since 2005 and believe that driver development should be collaborative rather than simply a matter of being told what to do.
We will discuss what you want from the session, observe how you currently approach different situations and identify practical ways of developing your driving.
Questions, discussion and reflection are an important part of the process. The aim is not just to change what you do, but to help you understand why a different approach may improve safety.
Automatic advanced driver development
Training is provided in an automatic car.
My training vehicle does not have specialist disability adaptations. If you are unsure whether the vehicle or training would be suitable for your individual requirements, please contact me before booking.
