How to Prepare for the ADI Part 1 Test
The ADI Part 1 test requires considerably more knowledge than the learner driver theory test. Passing depends on understanding the subject thoroughly and not simply memorising answers to practice questions.
The test has two sections: 100 multiple-choice questions and hazard perception. You must score at least 85 out of 100 overall, including at least 20 out of 25 in each of the four subject bands. The hazard perception pass mark is 57 out of 75.
Identify where you need to improve
If you have previously been unsuccessful, use your result to identify the section that needs the most attention. Repeatedly completing full mock tests may not solve a weakness in one particular subject area.
The four bands cover:
Road procedure
Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
Driving tests, disabilities and the law
Publications and instructional techniques
Study each area separately before returning to complete mock tests.
Use active learning
Reading alone can create the impression that you know more than you can recall. More effective techniques include:
Writing brief summaries in your own words
Creating flashcards for rules, signs and key facts
Explaining a subject aloud as though teaching a learner
Linking theory to situations you encounter while driving
Keeping a record of incorrectly answered questions and finding out why the correct answer is right
Short, regular study sessions are generally more useful than trying to learn everything shortly before the test.
Use reliable resources
Your preparation should include The Highway Code, official DVSA material and the Safe Driving for Life ADI preparation resources.
The official DVSA Theory Test and Hazard Perception Kit for Approved Driving Instructors provides study sections, revision questions, practice clips and timed mock tests. Practice hazard perception regularly so that you learn to recognise a developing hazard and not simply a potential one.
Do not rush to book another test
Before rebooking, aim to pass timed mock tests consistently, with a comfortable margin in every subject band. A single pass may be encouraging, but it does not necessarily show that you are ready.
ADI Part 1 help and support
If you are finding Part 1 difficult, I can help you identify gaps in your knowledge, develop a realistic study plan and explore learning methods suited to you.
My approach is calm, supportive and focused on understanding rather than memorising answers. Support is available to PDIs in Rotherham and through online training. Please contact Alistair Stuart Driver Training to discuss the areas in which you would like help.
